They are both hugely sought after and a must have for next generation movie viewing, but how are they faring in the DVD world today? Samsung have attempted to resolve the decision making for the consumer of whether to go for Blu-ray or the HD DVD player by introducing the Samsung BD-UP5000 Duo player on which both formats can be played.
Our sources inform us that Blu-ray is winning the battle at present, by outselling HD DVD by 9:2! The only HD DVD to reach the top sellers list was ‘The Departed’ while Blu-ray dominated the list.
A report carried out by Sony reveals sales statistics for HD-DVD and Blu-ray from Nielsen Videoscan who are the industry leaders in competitive sales information.

Videoscan reveal that the number of Blu-ray units sold has reached an impressive 844,000 while 708,600 HD DVD players have been bought. However, Blu-ray seem to be winning the race with ease mainly because of the large number of Sony Playstation 3’s which have been sold.
Although with these new next generation formats you get the benefit of a high quality picture with some great added extras, the current generation format still stands in good steed and we predict that there is a long hard road ahead before the world catches up with the new formats.

The total level of high def sales (both formats) is around the 2 million level (1.2 million BD and 930,000 HD DVD).The total retail mvoie disc market is 750 million+.Percentage and/or ratio 'leads' (they prefer these to actually saying how tiny the level of sales actually are tell us nothing without the actual numbers and the actual numbers show clearly how tiny and immature the market for high def is.We'll know more later this year when the 3 inexpensive Chinese brand HD DVD players arrive along with the Walmart players. Then the 'war' will begin for real and carry on for the following 12- 24mths.BD is saddled with higher costs, HD DVD may well take the a/v market - something a grossly over-priced and mere games console is extremely unlikey to do IMHO. reply

Did you ever use the PS3 as a Blu-Ray Player...? It works perfect... I love it and a lot of thousand people love it too.... And there are several more nice functions..., on the other Hand: Content sells... Why should I buy a 200$ HD-DVD Player if I can't get most of the movies I'd like to see... Then I`ll better buy for 200 $ more a Blu-Ray player, watching the movies I'd like to see... Cheap isn`t everything... People who buy HD-TV's can even buy a Blu-Ray Player... (Waiting for approval)
